Synopsis: When Alex sacrificed himself to save Lena, he thought he was committing himself to certain death, but what he got was almost worse. Imprisoned and tortured by the guards, his mind forces him to relive a past he would rather forget. But in the dark he grows stronger. Both hopeful and terrified, he fights to find his way back to her and the love he still clings to.
Plot: This novella is way too short and should have been a full-length novel. While the story does give a little more information as to Alex’s past, his time in the crypts, and his escape, it is simply not enough. There is very little storyline to this as it jumps from memory to memory with no connections between them all.
Character: There is no depth to anyone who appears in this story, but is rather a brief foray into Alex’s psyche. No one is given any importance, but seeing as this novella is only a few pages long that is hardly surprising.
Quote: This was my secret. She was the one who saved me.
Verdict: I would have loved for this to have continued on past Alex’s escape so we could see the final novel from Alex’s perspective. This does not have to be read after the first book as it crosses time from before Delirium until moments before the end of Pandemonium. Considering how fascinated I was with Alex, I am sorely disappointed that I did not get more of him.
